Lockdown Again; Basic Exercises and Activities you can do at Home

Governments have once again started implementing lockdown in some countries and a possible lockdown implementation was recently announced in Metro Manila and the rest of the Philippines.

Since March 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has completely changed everyone's lifestyle. The usual busy mornings, jam-packed traffic, hectic schedules, and weekly night outs were calmed and replaced by work from home set-up, tedious schedule planning of outdoor activities, and home-cooked meals.

With all the changes that happened, maintaining a good health condition has become a top priority for everyone, especially for the working class. However, gaining weight and uncontrollable eating also became a concern since most can no longer go to the gym or take that early or late-night run.

Staying healthy and fit while the lockdown is on, shouldn't be so hard. Here are some suggestions you may take and do in the comforts of your home.

General Cleaning:

It's like hitting 2 birds with 1 stone. Studies show that having a clean house can help in reducing asthma attacks, and allergies,  reduces the spread of bacteria and germs. It also helps in eliminating anxiety and stress. A clean place has a big impact on having a good mood and peace of mind.

Also, cleaning your house involves a lot of moving, lifting, stretching, and of course, burning calories and fats. All that sweeping, wiping the floors and tiles in your bathroom, and scrubbing the windows will help you sweat. Lifting that bags of rice, flour, and big boxes of laundry soaps are a good alternative to your usual lifting exercises. While vacuuming, do some lunges. Going up and down the stairs is also a good workout replacement for jogging and running on treadmills.

Cleaning houses can also be a good training point for teaching the kids how to do house chores and getting work done.

Yoga:

Staying at home, especially when you live alone or an extrovert can cause anxiety to some. So why not try yoga. It's proven to help relax your mind and reduce anxiety. Yoga is also a good exercise to improve your cardiovascular health, flexibility and can also help improve your muscle strength. Yoga can easily be done at home. Just go to your favorite spot, light some lavender candles, turn on soothing music (can be the sound of water flowing or a slow jam), and start meditating. Personally, I love listening to a podcast cast, Sleeping Pill before going to bed.

Nowadays, there are also a lot of online yoga classes that you can enroll in and join virtually if you prefer doing yoga with a class.

Gardening:

Attending and taking care of plants is one of the home activities that has a lot of benefits. Squatting to tend the soil and lifting those heavy pots are great workouts. Also, having indoor plants is proven to boost productivity and calmness. Indoor plants also freshen the air inside your house.

There are plants that can grow inside your house, and only require minimal sunlight (Jungler Boogies, Jade plant, Hoya, and Zebra plants are great choices).

You don't actually need to have a big garden to own plants. Having small to medium size pots with different small plants growing in them should do the trick. You can place the plant on your window sill, on top of your tables, or dedicate a shelf for your plant babies.

Hula Hoops:

Using hula hoops can be a fun workout. Doing it daily can help you burn calories and fats. Plus it helps strengthen your core muscles and improves your balance. This exercise can turn into a family activity when done with kids and family.

Redecorating:
Flex your artistic side by redecorating your personal space or your work areas at home.

Now that most of us are working from home, it's our chance to decorate our workstations the way we like them. Maximize your Pinterest accounts and get ideas of how you can beautify your workspace.

Personalizing your home work space can give you a sense of familiarity, boost productivity, confidence, and comfort. It's also therapeutic and relaxing.

If you are feeling a little extra, paint your wall with your choice of bold colors or stick wallpaper on your back wall to create an accent to your personal and workspace to show your personality.

A popular group on Facebook, Home Buddies, is a good source of ideas and recommendations of stores and markets where you can get affordable items and pieces that you can use to decorate your spaces.

Cooking:

Who doesn't love to eat and save? Learning to cook new recipes and coming up of your own recipe can be quite an achievement especially if you have never held a pot and pan before.

Whipping up your own meal and sharing it with your loved ones, seeing them enjoy the food you cooked is a satisfying feeling.

Cooking is always a great way to save some money. Aside from you get to pick the ingredients you like and guarantee the quality and freshness of the food you serve, you can also save up to 50% of your earnings if you cook your meals instead of buying take-out?

If you are just starting to learn how to cook and don't have a budget to enroll in a paid online culinary course, you can watch cooking tutorials on Facebook and youtube. A lot of home cook experts have started their social media channels where they upload their cooking videos. I personally love Judy Anne's Kitchen and Nigella Bites.

Plus, cooking your own popcorn and making your house smell like the cinema house is a great touch to movie nights enjoyed at home.😜

Staying at home need not be boring, we can always find ways to make the circumstances fun and healthy. Let's take this opportunity to improve not only our physical health but also our mental health by putting ourselves first and indulging in activities that we can do at home.
